‘OK, so we need to destroy the Hell Hound,’ I said. ‘But we knew that much before. What we really need to know is how to destroy it. Any leads?’

‘We’re still working on it,’ Donny grumbled.

What a waste of a day!

‘What else can we do to keep Mark safe?’ I asked, annoyed.

There had to be something. Right now, I’d make Mark dance in the rain with frogs if I thought it might help him.

‘I suggest we sew the feather into your pocket,’ Donny said helpfully. ‘That way there’s no risk of you dropping it again. And here …’ Donny handed Mark a few more feathers. ‘I took these from my phoenix today. He’s still young, so they’re a bit fluffy, but they should do the trick.’

I glanced at the clock on the wall. ‘I really need to do my zoo chores before I go home or Mum will kill me.’

‘I’ll help. That way they’ll be done quicker,’ Mark offered.

Hmm, phoenix feather or not … I wasn’t happy about Mark helping.

‘You stay here,’ I told him. ‘It’s safer.’

I went about my zoo chores feeling as if the grey sky was crushing me. How had I let everything go so horribly wrong?

We were no closer to figuring out why the Hell Hound was killing people, or how to destroy it once and for all. And we were no closer to saving Mark from doom.

Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse, my big sister came charging towards me like a steamroller.

‘OUT OF MY WAY!’ she bellowed.

‘Grace, chillax !’

She looked furious. Her face was bright red and she was gritting her teeth and clenching her fists.
